Abstract
At the occasion of the 80 th birthday of Pierre Compère, his rich career as a phycologist and cyanobacteriologist is placed in the context of the advances of the scientific theories, the evolution of the cyanobacterial taxonomy and the nomenclatural discussions linked to the utilization of two different Codes of nomenclature.
