        <label>Abstract</label>
        <p><bold>Background and aims</bold> – With 40 species, Brazil is the centre of diversity for <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Vanilla">Vanilla</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic>. Frederico Carlos Hoehne described eight <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Vanilla">Vanilla</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> species for the Brazilian flora, including <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Vanilla">Vanilla</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="schwackeana">schwackeana</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic>, an obscure taxon currently assumed to be a synonym of <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Vanilla">V.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="planifolia">planifolia</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic>. While studying Neotropical <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Vanilla">Vanilla</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic>, plants were found in gallery forests of the Vale do Rio Doce region, Minas Gerais, south-eastern Brazil. Based on the examination of the protologues of the Brazilian species, in addition to the study of herbarium specimens, it was verified that the plants correspond to the rare <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Vanilla">V.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="schwackeana">schwackeana</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic>.</p>
        <p><bold>Material and methods</bold> – A redescription of <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Vanilla">V.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="schwackeana">schwackeana</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> is provided, and a morphological comparison with other Neotropical taxa is presented. An illustration of <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Vanilla">V.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="schwackeana">schwackeana</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> based on living specimens is provided, and its geographic distribution is presented based on recent findings. The position of <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Vanilla">V.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="schwackeana">schwackeana</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> within <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Vanilla">Vanilla</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> is discussed based on both morphological data and a molecular phylogeny.</p>
        <p><bold>Key results</bold> – <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Vanilla">Vanilla</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="schwackeana">schwackeana</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> is distinguishable by its pseudopetiolate leaves, by its largely elliptic to obelliptic leaf blades with attenuate base and acuminate apex, by its apical racemes with small flowers, by its yellow labellum with white undulate-crenulate margins, and by its papillous appendages on the apical portion of the labellar crest. Both morphological and molecular data suggest a close relationship of <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Vanilla">V.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="schwackeana">schwackeana</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> with <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Vanilla">V.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="appendiculata">appendiculata</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic>, <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Vanilla">V.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="hartii">hartii</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic>, and the Brazilian endemic <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Vanilla">V.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="rupicola">rupicola</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic>. Based on current data, <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Vanilla">V.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="schwackeana">schwackeana</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> is assessed as Critically Endangered.</p>
        <p><bold>Conclusion</bold> – Integrative taxonomy was crucial to understand the identity and species boundaries of <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Vanilla">V.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="schwackeana">schwackeana</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic>. The <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Vanilla">V.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="appendiculata">appendiculata</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name>/<tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Vanilla">V.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="schwackeana">schwackeana</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic>/(<italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Vanilla">V.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="hartii">hartii</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic>/<italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Vanilla">V.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="rupicola">rupicola</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic>) clade comprises an unrecognized infrageneric <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Vanilla">Vanilla</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> group. It seems plausible that the formation of a new infrageneric group will be necessary. As the habitat of <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Vanilla">V.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="schwackeana">schwackeana</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> has been devastated by iron ore extraction, conservation strategies for this Brazilian endemic species will be necessary.</p>

      <title>Introduction</title>
      <p>Frederico Carlos Hoehne (1882–1959), a Brazilian botanist who devoted his life to the study of the Brazilian flora, was the first director of the Botanical Garden and Botanical Institute of São Paulo. During his fieldworks in Brazil, Hoehne collected more than 10,000 plant specimens, leading to the description of at least 200 species new to science. He wrote more than 200 scientific papers, mostly regarding the plants he collected on his field trips (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B14">Franco and Drummond 2005</xref>). Frederico C. Hoehne had a special interest in orchids. In addition to the volumes dedicated to orchids in his important work Flora Brasilica (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B17">Hoehne 1945</xref>), he published the impressive book Iconografia de Orchidaceas do Brasil (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B18">Hoehne 1949</xref>). Among the Brazilian orchids, Hoehne studied many genera, with special attention to the groups currently included among the <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="subfamily">Vanilloideae</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name>, such as <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Cleistes">Cleistes</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> Rich. ex Lindl. and <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Vanilla">Vanilla</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> Plum. ex Mill. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B17">Hoehne (1945)</xref> provided detailed descriptions and illustrations of 38 species of <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Vanilla">Vanilla</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> in Flora Brasilica, eight of them described by him, including the enigmatic <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Vanilla">V.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="schwackeana">schwackeana</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> Hoehne.</p>
      <p>The description of <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Vanilla">V.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="schwackeana">schwackeana</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> was based on a single specimen collected in Minas Gerais, south-eastern Brazil, by Carl August Wilhelm Schwacke (<italic>Schwacke 11106</italic>, RB), who, however, did not specify the locality. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B16">Hoehne (1944)</xref> suspected that the specimen might have been a mixture of plant parts from different <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Vanilla">Vanilla</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> species. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B33">Soto Arenas and Cribb (2010)</xref> also recognized <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Vanilla">V.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="schwackeana">schwackeana</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> as a distinct taxon, but agreed with Hoehne’s observation that the specimen could by a mixture of plant elements. Currently, based on examination of an image of the type specimen, <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Vanilla">V.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="schwackeana">schwackeana</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> has been synonymized under <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Vanilla">V.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="planifolia">planifolia</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> Andrews (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B20">Karremans et al. 2020</xref>). In addition, based on Hoehne’s premise that the type of <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Vanilla">V.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="schwackeana">schwackeana</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> could be a mixture of plant elements from distinct <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Vanilla">Vanilla</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> species, a dissected flower of the holotype (<italic>Schwacke 11106</italic>, RB) was designated as a lectotype (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B20">Karremans et al. 2020</xref>).</p>
      <p>With more than 100 species distributed throughout tropical regions of Americas, Africa, and Asia, <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Vanilla">Vanilla</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> is the most species-rich genus among the <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="subfamily">Vanilloideae</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B6">Cameron 2003</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B27">Pansarin and Menezes 2023</xref>). <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Vanilla">Vanilla</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> is monophyletic, with three main lineages, two of which occur throughout the Neotropics (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B5">Bouetard et al. 2010</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B26">Pansarin and Ferreira 2022</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B27">Pansarin and Menezes 2023</xref>). Among <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Vanilla">Vanilla</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic>, a Neotropical clade with thin and membranaceous leaves emerges as sister to a clade that includes two subclades, a predominantly African/Asian/Caribbean clade and a second, strictly Neotropical one. In the latter, epiphytic <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Vanilla">Vanilla</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> (i.e. <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Vanilla">V.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="palmarum">palmarum</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> (Salzm. ex Lindl.) Lindl. and <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Vanilla">V.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="bicolor">bicolor</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> Lindl.) emerge as sister to a large clade including mainly nomadic vines (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B26">Pansarin and Ferreira 2022</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B27">Pansarin and Menezes 2023</xref>). With more than 40 species, Brazil is the centre of diversity for <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Vanilla">Vanilla</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic>, with a number of endemisms (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B17">Hoehne 1945</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B25">Pansarin 2010</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B28">Pansarin and Miranda 2016</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B27">Pansarin and Menezes 2023</xref>).</p>
      <p>In the course of studies on Neotropical <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Vanilla">Vanilla</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic>, an unidentified species was found in gallery forests of the Vale do Rio Doce region, Minas Gerais, south-eastern Brazil.       <title>Material and methods</title>
      <sec sec-type="Study area" id="SECID0EWNAC">
        <title>Study area</title>
        <p>The fieldwork was performed along the Vale do Rio Doce, in the state of Minas Gerais, south-eastern Brazil. The climate of the region is classified as “Aw”, namely semi-humid warm tropical (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B21">Köppen 1948</xref>). Rainfall is irregularly distributed, with a rainy season from November to April (800–1300 mm) and a dry season from May to October (150–250 mm). The Vale do Rio Doce is located within the limits of the Atlantic Forest and Cerrado. Over the last centuries, the natural vegetation of the region has been reduced due to land degradation caused by anthropogenic disturbance as a consequence of intensive iron ore exploitation (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B7">Consórcio ECOPLAN - LUME 2010</xref>).</p>
      </sec>
      <sec sec-type="Taxonomic treatment" id="SECID0EEOAC">
        <title>Taxonomic treatment</title>
        <p>Fresh and herbarium material of flowering and fruiting plants was used for the study. Photographs were based on specimens collected in the field. Measurements were made directly on the floral structures using a Vernier caliper. The vegetative structures, inflorescence, and flowers were photographed with a Nikon D-SLR D800 camera and a Micro Nikkor 105 mm f2.8 lens. Floral details were analysed with a Stereozoom Leica S8 APO stereomicroscope with an integrated photo output. Digitized images were used for diagramming a template over a black background, following the model presented by <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B17">Hoehne (1945)</xref>, using Microsoft PowerPoint.</p>
        <p>The terminology for describing shapes followed <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B31">Radford et al. (1974)</xref>. Features specific to <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="family">Orchidaceae</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> were based on <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B9">Dressler (1993)</xref> and <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B29">Pridgeon et al. (1999)</xref>. The infrageneric classification of Neotropical <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Vanilla">Vanilla</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> followed <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B33">Soto Arenas and Cribb (2010)</xref>. The original descriptions and digital images from types of related species of <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Vanilla">Vanilla</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> were consulted. Plant specimens were vouchered according to the usual techniques (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B13">Fidalgo and Bononi 1989</xref>) and then deposited in the LBMBP and SPFR herbaria. In addition, the BHCB, DIAM, HDJF, LBMBP, R, RB, SPFR, SPF, and UEC herbaria (acronyms according to <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B36">Thiers 2023</xref>) were also examined in order to study the Brazilian diversity of <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Vanilla">Vanilla</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic>. Living plants were collected in the field and maintained in the <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Vanilla">Vanilla</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> germplasm bank of the

        <p>The map with the geographic distribution of <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Vanilla">V.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="schwackeana">schwackeana</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> was produced with QGIS v.3.32.2 (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B30">QGIS Development Team 2023</xref>). The occurrence map is based on the new records of <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Vanilla">V.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="schwackeana">schwackeana</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> since the locality of the type (<italic>Schwacke 11106</italic>) is unknown (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B16">Hoehne 1944</xref>).</p>
        <p>The preliminary conservation status of <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Vanilla">V.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="schwackeana">schwackeana</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> was defined according to the IUCN Red List categories and criteria, and guidelines (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B19">IUCN Standards and Petitions Committee 2022</xref>). The geographical parameters of Area of Occupancy (<abbrev xlink:title="Area of Occupancy" id="ABBRID0EGCAE">AOO</abbrev>) estimated using a 2 × 2 km grid and Extent of Occurrence (<abbrev xlink:title="Extent of Occurrence" id="ABBRID0EKCAE">EOO</abbrev>) were calculated using GeoCAT (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B2">Bachman et al. 2011</xref>).</p>
      </sec>

          <p>A total of 57 <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Vanilla">Vanilla</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> accessions (41 species) were analysed and are referred to here as the ingroup. <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Lecanorchis">Lecanorchis</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="multiflora">multiflora</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> J.J.Sm. was selected as an outgroup according to previous phylogenetic studies on <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="subfamily">Vanilloideae</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> (e.g. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B26">Pansarin and Ferreira 2022</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B27">Pansarin and Menezes 2023</xref>). A data matrix was built based on sequences available in the GenBank database and obtained during the course of this study. A list of ingroup and outgroup species, vouchers, and GenBank accession numbers is given in Supplementary material <xref ref-type="supplementary-material" rid="S1">1</xref>.</p>
        </sec>
        <sec sec-type="DNA extraction, amplification, and sequencing" id="SECID0ECEAE">
          <title>
            <italic>DNA extraction, amplification, and sequencing</italic>
          </title>
          <p>DNA of <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Vanilla">Vanilla</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="schwackeana">schwackeana</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> was extracted from fresh material according to a modified CTAB method (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B8">Doyle and Doyle 1987</xref>). The amplifications were carried out using 50 µL PCR volumes. Relaxation of the DNA strands was achieved by the addition of a 5M betaine solution to the PCR preparations. Primers of the nuclear ribosomal transcribed spacer region (<abbrev xlink:title="ribosomal transcribed spacer" id="ABBRID0E1EAE">ITS</abbrev>), including the 5.8S gene, were used for amplification and sequencing (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B34">Sun et al. 1994</xref>). Taq DNA polymerase was added to the PCR mixture at 80°C following a 10 min period of denaturation at 99°C in the thermocycler. Thirty-five cycles were run according to the following program: denaturation, 1 min, 94°C; annealing, 45 s, 64°C; extension, 1 min, 72°C; final extension, 5 min, 72°C. Amplified PCR products were purified using GFX PCR columns (GE Health Care). Sequencing reactions were prepared using Big Dye™ Terminator v.3.1 (ABI), purified PCR products, and the same aforementioned primers. Samples were dehydrated and resuspended with loading dye. Sequences were obtained using an Applied Biosystems automated sequencer model 3100. Sequence Navigator and Autoassembler (Applied Biosystems) software was used for sequence editing and assembly of complementary and overlapping sequences. DNA sequences were aligned using BioEdit v.5.0.9 (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B15">Hall 1999</xref>).</p>
        </sec>
        <sec sec-type="Phylogenetic analyses" id="SECID0EGFAE">

            <italic>Phylogenetic analyses</italic>
          </title>
          <p>A data matrix of <abbrev xlink:title="ribosomal transcribed spacer" id="ABBRID0EPFAE">ITS</abbrev> containing 58 accessions was used for phylogenetic analyses. Maximum parsimony analysis (<abbrev xlink:title="Maximum parsimony" id="ABBRID0ETFAE">MP</abbrev>) was run with PAUP* v.4.0b5 (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B35">Swofford 2001</xref>). A heuristic search was conducted with 1000 replicates of random taxon entry additions, MULTREES option, and the tree bisection-reconnection (<abbrev xlink:title="tree bisection-reconnection" id="ABBRID0E2FAE">TBR</abbrev>) swapping algorithm, holding 10 trees per replicate and saving all the shortest trees. Support for clades was assessed using 1,000 bootstrap replicates (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B11">Felsenstein 1985</xref>). Bootstrap support (<abbrev xlink:title="Bootstrap support" id="ABBRID0EDGAE">BS</abbrev>) values above 50% were calculated and mapped above the branches of the consensus tree. For bootstrap support levels, we considered bootstrap percentages of 50–70% as weak, 71–85% as moderate, and &gt; 85% as strong (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B22">Kress et al. 2002</xref>). Additionally, the <abbrev xlink:title="ribosomal transcribed spacer" id="ABBRID0ELGAE">ITS</abbrev> data matrix was analysed by Bayesian Inference (<abbrev xlink:title="Bayesian Inference" id="ABBRID0EPGAE">BI</abbrev>) using MrBayes v.3.1 (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B32">Ronquist and Huelsenbeck 2003</xref>). The optimal model of sequence evolution was selected using MEGA X (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B23">Kumar et al. 2018</xref>) based on the Bayesian Information Criterion (<abbrev xlink:title="Bayesian Information Criterion" id="ABBRID0E2GAE">BIC</abbrev>). The software selected HKY+G as the best evolution model for the <abbrev xlink:title="ribosomal transcribed spacer" id="ABBRID0E6GAE">ITS</abbrev> region. Four Markov chains were run simultaneously for three million generations, with parameters sampled every 100 generations. The consensus tree was calculated after removal of the first 3,000 trees, which were considered to be the burn-in. Posterior probability (<abbrev xlink:title="Posterior probability" id="ABBRID0EDHAE">PP</abbrev>) values above 0.5 were calculated and mapped above the branches of the consensus tree.</p>

            <p><italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Vanilla">Vanilla</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="schwackeana">schwackeana</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> occurs in both gallery forests and mesophytic semideciduous forests from the south of Vale do Rio Doce, eastern Minas Gerais, south-eastern Brazil (Fig. <xref ref-type="fig" rid="F2">2</xref>). <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Vanilla">Vanilla</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="schwackeana">schwackeana</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> shows a nomadic vine habit, rooting on the forest litterfall, and climbing on tree trunks. The elevation is from 730 to 810 m a.s.l. Each flower lasts ca 12 hours.</p>

            <p>Critically Endangered: <abbrev xlink:title="Critically Endangered" id="ABBRID0EIOAE">CR</abbrev> B2ab(i,ii,iii). <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Vanilla">Vanilla</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="schwackeana">schwackeana</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> is a rare species growing in mesophytic forests in the municipalities of Timóteo and Antônio Dias, southern region of Vale do Rio Doce. The populations only contain a few specimens. The species is known from only three herbarium collections, the holotype without any locality information and two more recent specimens. Since only two specimens have locality data, the <abbrev xlink:title="Extent of Occurrence" id="ABBRID0EXOAE">EOO</abbrev> (extent of occurrence) cannot be calculated. The area of occupancy (<abbrev xlink:title="Area of Occupancy" id="ABBRID0E2OAE">AOO</abbrev>) is estimated to be 8 km<sup>2</sup> (cell width 2 km), which falls within the limits for Critically Endangered (<abbrev xlink:title="Critically Endangered" id="ABBRID0EBPAE">CR</abbrev>) under criterion B2 (area of occupancy). The two recent specimens are found in one location, which also falls within the limits of Critically Endangered under subcriterion a. The region where individuals of <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Vanilla">V.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="schwackeana">schwackeana</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> are found is being studied for the extraction of iron ore by a mining company. The Vale do Rio Doce has known a long history of deforestation. The region comprises 81 municipalities, 24 of which comprise the “Vale do Aço” (Steel Valley), including Timóteo and Antônio Dias, where exploitation of iron ore has drastically reduced the native flora of the region to sparse forest fragments. I therefore project a continuing decline in (i) extent of occurrence, (ii) area of occupancy, and (iii) extent and/or quality of habitat. Considering these threats and the fact that the species is distributed in one location, <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Vanilla">V.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="schwackeana">schwackeana</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> is assessed as Critically Endangered (<abbrev xlink:title="Critically Endangered" id="ABBRID0E2PAE">CR</abbrev>).</p>

            <p>Based on Hoehne’s hypothesis that the holotype of <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Vanilla">V.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="schwackeana">schwackeana</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> is a mixture of elements from distinct <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Vanilla">Vanilla</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> species and due to the size of the similar floral parts, a dissected flower from the material <italic>Schwacke 11106</italic>, deposited in the RB herbarium, was designated as the lectotype of <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Vanilla">V.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="schwackeana">schwackeana</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> and synonymized under <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Vanilla">V.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="planifolia">planifolia</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B20">Karremans et al. 2020</xref>). However, according to my data based on live plants, except for the immature fruit whose characteristics may overlap with those of many Neotropical <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Vanilla">Vanilla</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic>, all other elements present in the material collected by Carl August Wilhelm Schwacke agree with those of the specimens found in the Rio Doce Valley, in the state of Minas Gerais. Therefore, according to the data presented here, there is no mixture of elements in the specimen <italic>Schwacke 11106</italic>. Based on the fact that <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B16">Hoehne (1944)</xref> described <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Vanilla">V.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="schwackeana">schwackeana</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> on the basis of a single collection, I conclude that the collection <italic>Schwacke 11106</italic> (RB) is the holotype of <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Vanilla">V.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="schwackeana">schwackeana</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic>.</p>

        <title>Morphological affinities</title>
        <p><italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Vanilla">Vanilla</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="schwackeana">schwackeana</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> is easily recognized by its pseudopetiolate leaves, by its largely elliptic to obelliptic leaf blades with attenuate base and acuminate apex, by its apical inflorescence with small flowers, by its yellow labellum with white undulate-crenulate margins, and by its papillous appendages on the apical portion of the labellar crest. These characteristics suggest a close relationship of <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Vanilla">V.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="schwackeana">schwackeana</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> with <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Vanilla">V.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="rupicola">rupicola</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> Pansarin &amp; E.L.F.Menezes and with some species currently recognized in the <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Vanilla">V.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="planifolia">planifolia</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> group and <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Vanilla">V.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="trigonocarpa">trigonocarpa</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> group, i.e. <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Vanilla">V.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="appendiculata">appendiculata</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> Rolfe and <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Vanilla">V.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="hartii">hartii</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> Rolfe, respectively (Table <xref ref-type="table" rid="T1">1</xref>). This hypothesis is corroborated by phylogenetic results (see further).</p>

        <title>Phylogenetic relationships</title>
        <p>Phylogenetic analysis of the <abbrev xlink:title="ribosomal transcribed spacer" id="ABBRID0EQDAG">ITS</abbrev> region resulted in strongly congruent <abbrev xlink:title="Maximum parsimony" id="ABBRID0EUDAG">MP</abbrev> and <abbrev xlink:title="Bayesian Inference" id="ABBRID0EYDAG">BI</abbrev> trees (Fig. <xref ref-type="fig" rid="F3">3</xref>). In both analyses, the clade with Neotropical <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Vanilla">Vanilla</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> with membranaceous leaves (<abbrev xlink:title="Posterior probability" id="ABBRID0EHEAG">PP</abbrev> 1, <abbrev xlink:title="Bootstrap support" id="ABBRID0ELEAG">BS</abbrev> 100%; Fig. <xref ref-type="fig" rid="F3">3</xref>) emerges as sister to a large clade (<abbrev xlink:title="Posterior probability" id="ABBRID0ETEAG">PP</abbrev> 0.86, <abbrev xlink:title="Bootstrap support" id="ABBRID0EXEAG">BS</abbrev> 99%) with two subclades: a predominantly Old World/Caribbean clade (<abbrev xlink:title="Posterior probability" id="ABBRID0E2EAG">PP</abbrev> 0.95, <abbrev xlink:title="Bootstrap support" id="ABBRID0E6EAG">BS</abbrev> 99%) and a well-supported clade including the remaining Neotropical <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Vanilla">Vanilla</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> (<abbrev xlink:title="Posterior probability" id="ABBRID0EKFAG">PP</abbrev> 0.99, <abbrev xlink:title="Bootstrap support" id="ABBRID0EOFAG">BS</abbrev> 98%; Fig. <xref ref-type="fig" rid="F3">3</xref>). Within the non-membranaceous Neotropical <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Vanilla">Vanilla</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic>, species currently recognized among the <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Vanilla">V.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="palmarum">palmarum</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> group, i.e. the epiphytes <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Vanilla">V.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="palmarum">palmarum</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> and <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Vanilla">V.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="bicolor">bicolor</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic>, besides <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Vanilla">V.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="sprucei">sprucei</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> Rolfe, emerge in a basal position as sisters to a large clade whose species are mostly hemiepiphytes or nomadic vines (<abbrev xlink:title="Posterior probability" id="ABBRID0EJHAG">PP</abbrev> 1, <abbrev xlink:title="Bootstrap support" id="ABBRID0ENHAG">BS</abbrev> 65%). In the latter, the Amazonian <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Vanilla">V.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="trigonocarpa">trigonocarpa</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> Hoehne emerges as sister to a clade with two subclades: one clade including the members of the <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Vanilla">V.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="pompona">pompona</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> group, i.e. <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Vanilla">V.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="calyculata">calyculata</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> Schltr., <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Vanilla">V.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="chamissonis">chamissonis</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> Klotzsch, <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Vanilla">V.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="paulista">paulista</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> Fraga &amp; Pansarin, and <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Vanilla">V.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="pompona">pompona</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> Schiede (<abbrev xlink:title="Posterior probability" id="ABBRID0ETJAG">PP</abbrev> 1, <abbrev xlink:title="Bootstrap support" id="ABBRID0EXJAG">BS</abbrev> 85%), while the other large clade includes the remaining Neotropical species (Fig. <xref ref-type="fig" rid="F3">3</xref>). In the latter, a strongly supported clade (<abbrev xlink:title="Posterior probability" id="ABBRID0E6JAG">PP</abbrev> 1, <abbrev xlink:title="Bootstrap support" id="ABBRID0EDKAG">BS</abbrev> 95%), including <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Vanilla">V.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="hartii">hartii</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic>, <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Vanilla">V.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="appendiculata">appendiculata</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic>, and <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Vanilla">V.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="rupicola">rupicola</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic>/<italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Vanilla">V.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="schwackeana">schwackeana</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> (<abbrev xlink:title="Posterior probability" id="ABBRID0ETLAG">PP</abbrev> 1, <abbrev xlink:title="Bootstrap support" id="ABBRID0EXLAG">BS</abbrev> 99%), emerges as sister to the remaining non-membranaceous <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Vanilla">Vanilla</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> with moderate support (<abbrev xlink:title="Posterior probability" id="ABBRID0ECMAG">PP</abbrev> 0.81, <abbrev xlink:title="Bootstrap support" id="ABBRID0EGMAG">BS</abbrev> 70%; Fig. <xref ref-type="fig" rid="F3">3</xref>).</p>

      <title>Discussion</title>
      <p><xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B4">Batista et al. (2023)</xref> have pointed out the problems resulting from the decision to base species boundaries exclusively on dried specimens of <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="subfamily">Vanilloideae</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name>. Since its description about 80 years ago, <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Vanilla">Vanilla</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="schwackeana">schwackeana</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> has been regarded as an obscure taxon. In fact, <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Vanilla">V.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="schwackeana">schwackeana</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> was described on the basis of a single specimen (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B16">Hoehne 1944</xref>, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B17">1945</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B33">Soto Arenas and Cribb 2010</xref>). Currently, based on the image of this specimen, <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Vanilla">V.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="schwackeana">schwackeana</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> has been assumed to be conspecific with <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Vanilla">V.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="planifolia">planifolia</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B20">Karremans et al. 2020</xref>). Here, the mystery about <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Vanilla">V.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="schwackeana">schwackeana</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> is finally unravelled with the use of integrative taxonomy. Conclusions about the circumscription of this rare species are based on extensive fieldwork, on data about geographical distribution, on morphological features on both living and dried specimens, and on a molecular phylogeny. Although the sizes of floral parts overlap, the vegetative and floral morphology of <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Vanilla">V.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="schwackeana">schwackeana</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> strongly differs from that of <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Vanilla">V.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="planifolia">planifolia</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> (e.g. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B1">Azofeifa-Bolaños et al. 2017</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B24">Maceda et al. 2023</xref>). In addition, the type of <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Vanilla">V.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="schwackeana">schwackeana</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> has been considered to be a mixture of plant elements (see <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B16">Hoehne 1944</xref>, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B17">1945</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B33">Soto Arenas and Cribb 2010</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B20">Karremans et al. 2020</xref>). This assumption resulted in the lectotypification of a single flower from the type specimen (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B20">Karremans et al. 2020</xref>). According to the data presented here, there is no mixture of elements in the specimen collected by Carl August Wilhelm Schwacke (<italic>Schwacke 11106</italic>). Plant materials collected in the southern region of Vale do Rio Doce strongly agree with the type specimen of <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Vanilla">V.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="schwackeana">schwackeana</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> (<italic>Schwacke 11106</italic>). Besides its distinctive morphology, in Brazil, <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Vanilla">V.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="planifolia">planifolia</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> is considered to occur in the Amazon region, while <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Vanilla">V.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="schwackeana">schwackeana</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> occurs in Minas Gerais, south-eastern Brazil. As far as is known, <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Vanilla">V.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="planifolia">planifolia</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> does not occur in Minas Gerais (Emerson R. Pansarin pers. obs.). The results presented here indicate the occurrence of <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Vanilla">V.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="schwackeana">schwackeana</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> in the south of Vale do Rio Doce. However, it seems plausible that <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Vanilla">V.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="schwackeana">schwackeana</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> had a wider distribution in the past, as the Vale do Rio Doce has a long history of vegetation destruction due of iron ore exploitation (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B7">Consórcio ECOPLAN - LUME 2010</xref>).</p>
      <p>My results reveal that <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Vanilla">V.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="schwackeana">schwackeana</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> is easily distinguishable by its pseudopetiolate leaves, by its largely elliptic to obelliptic leaf blades with an attenuated base and acuminate apex, by its apical inflorescences with small flowers, by its yellow labellum with white undulate-crenulate margins, and by its papillous appendages on the apical portion of the labellar crest. Such characteristics suggest a close relationships of <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Vanilla">V.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="schwackeana">schwackeana</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> with <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Vanilla">V.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="appendiculata">appendiculata</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic>, <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Vanilla">V.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="hartii">hartii</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic>, and the Brazilian endemic <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Vanilla">V.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="rupicola">rupicola</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B10">Engels and Ferneda Rocha 2016</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B3">Barona-Colmenares 2018</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B12">Ferreira et al. 2020</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B27">Pansarin and Menezes 2023</xref>). In addition to the morphological data, molecular phylogenetic data strongly suggests a close relationship between <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Vanilla">V.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="schwackeana">schwackeana</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> and <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Vanilla">V.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="rupicola">rupicola</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic>, a species belonging to the Espinhaço Range in the Vale do Jequitinhonha (Fig. <xref ref-type="fig" rid="F2">2</xref>), Minas Gerais (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B27">Pansarin and Menezes 2023</xref>). Both sister species <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Vanilla">V.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="schwackeana">schwackeana</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic>/<italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Vanilla">V.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="rupicola">rupicola</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> emerge as belonging to a clade that also includes <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Vanilla">V.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="appendiculata">appendiculata</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> and <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Vanilla">V.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="hartii">hartii</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> (Fig. <xref ref-type="fig" rid="F3">3</xref>). According to the classification proposed by <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B33">Soto Arenas and Cribb (2010)</xref>, <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Vanilla">V.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="schwackeana">schwackeana</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> and <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Vanilla">V.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="appendiculata">appendiculata</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> are members of the <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Vanilla">V.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="planifolia">planifolia</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> group, while <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Vanilla">V.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="hartii">hartii</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> is a member of the <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Vanilla">V.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="trigonocarpa">trigonocarpa</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> group. As pointed out by <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B27">Pansarin and Menezes (2023)</xref>, infrageneric realignment will be necessary because <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Vanilla">V.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="trigonocarpa">trigonocarpa</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> emerges in a basal position within the non-membranous nomadic vine/hemiepiphyte <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Vanilla">Vanilla</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic>, while <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Vanilla">V.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="schwackeana">schwackeana</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> and <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Vanilla">V.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="hartii">hartii</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> emerge among the most derived clades among non-membranaceous Neotropical <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Vanilla">Vanilla</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> (Fig. <xref ref-type="fig" rid="F3">3</xref>). Consequently, both the <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Vanilla">V.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="trigonocarpa">trigonocarpa</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> group and the <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Vanilla">V.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="planifolia">planifolia</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> group (sensu <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B33">Soto Arenas and Cribb 2010</xref>) are polyphyletic (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B27">Pansarin and Menezes 2023</xref>). Besides such realignments, according to the current <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Vanilla">Vanilla</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> classification by <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B33">Soto Arenas and Cribb (2010)</xref>, the <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Vanilla">V.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="appendiculata">appendiculata</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name>/<tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Vanilla">V.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="schwackeana">schwackeana</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic>/(<italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Vanilla">V.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="hartii">hartii</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic>/<italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Vanilla">V.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="rupicola">rupicola</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic>) clade comprises an unrecognized infrageneric <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Vanilla">Vanilla</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> group. Based on the results presented here, it seems plausible that the formation of a group comprising species from this clade will be necessary. Although the identity of <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Vanilla">V.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="schwackeana">schwackeana</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> has been clarified in this study, efforts are needed in order to clarify the identity of other obscure <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Vanilla">Vanilla</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> names, such as <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Vanilla">V.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="dungsii">dungsii</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> Pabst, and another species described by Frederico Carlos Hoehne on the basis of a single specimen collected by Carl August Wilhelm, i.e. <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Vanilla">V.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="dubia">dubia</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> Hoehne.</p>

    <sec sec-type="Conclusion" id="SECID0E3BBG">
      <title>Conclusion</title>
      <p>Integrative taxonomy was crucial to understand the identity and species boundaries of <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Vanilla">V.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="schwackeana">schwackeana</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic>. The <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Vanilla">V.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="appendiculata">appendiculata</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name>/ <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Vanilla">V.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="schwackeana">schwackeana</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic>/(<italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Vanilla">V.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="hartii">hartii</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic>/<italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Vanilla">V.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="rupicola">rupicola</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic>) clade comprises an unrecognized infrageneric <italic><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Vanilla">Vanilla</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></italic> group.
